How Long Does Cabinet Paint Last?

A professionally refinished cabinet finish is a long-term finish — but its lifespan is decided before the colour goes on. Degreasing, sanding, the right primer, a quality coating system and proper curing are what separate a finish that lasts for years from one that chips within months. MV Painting backs its cabinet workmanship with a 2-year warranty against peeling, blistering or flaking caused by application.

What makes a cabinet finish last

Degreasing. Kitchen cabinets carry years of cooking grease, especially around the stove and handles. Paint applied over grease will fail, no matter how good the paint is. Thorough cleaning and degreasing is the non-negotiable first step.

Sanding and priming. Sanding gives the primer something to grip, and a bonding primer seals the old finish — including dark wood tones — so the new coating adheres and the old colour stays hidden.

The coating system. Fine-finish sprayed coatings lay down an even film at the right thickness, without brush marks or thin spots that wear through early at edges and handles. At MV Painting, the removed doors and drawer fronts are sprayed in a professional booth at our shop, which keeps dust off the wet finish and lets the coating cure evenly.

Curing. Paint feels dry long before it is fully cured. A refinished kitchen should be treated gently for the first weeks — no harsh scrubbing, and care with steam and standing water — while the coating reaches full hardness.

What shortens the life of painted cabinets

Steam and standing water left on doors below kettles and sinks, harsh or abrasive cleaners, and impacts on edges are the usual causes of early wear. Skipping preparation is the other one: a fast repaint over a glossy, greasy surface may look fine in photos and still be failing within the year. When you compare cabinet quotes, compare the preparation steps in writing — that is where durability is bought.

Care that keeps the finish looking new

Clean with a soft cloth and a mild cleaner, wipe up splashes and steam moisture rather than leaving them to sit, and avoid abrasive pads. Treated that way, a properly prepared and sprayed finish keeps its smooth, factory-style look through years of daily kitchen use.

Common questions

Will the paint chip around the handles?

Handles and edges are the highest-touch areas, which is exactly why adhesion matters. On a surface that has been degreased, sanded and primed properly, the coating is bonded to the door rather than sitting on top of it, and it is made to stand up to daily handling.

What does the 2-year warranty cover?

Peeling, blistering or flaking caused by the application is repaired free under our 2-year workmanship warranty. Damage from impacts, water left standing, or harsh chemicals is not an application defect, and we will tell you honestly which one we are looking at.

Can painted cabinets be touched up later?

Yes. Because the colour and products are recorded on your project, small touch-ups can be matched later without refinishing the whole kitchen.
