Should You Spray or Brush Kitchen Cabinets?

Spraying produces the smooth, factory-style finish that makes refinished cabinets look new; brushing and rolling leave visible texture. The tool is not the whole story — preparation and the coating system decide durability — but for cabinet doors, spraying is the professional standard. MV Painting cleans, sands, primes and fine-finish sprays cabinets, and this page explains the honest differences.

The finish difference

A spray gun lays the coating down in a fine, even mist, so it levels out into a smooth film with no brush strokes and no roller stipple. On flat cabinet doors and drawer fronts, that difference is obvious the moment light crosses the surface. Brushing can be levelled with skill and additives, but on large flat panels it rarely matches a sprayed finish — which is why new cabinets from a factory are sprayed, not brushed.

Durability: it is the prep, not just the tool

A sprayed finish over poor preparation will still fail. Degreasing, sanding and a bonding primer are what make any coating — sprayed or brushed — stay bonded through years of handle pulls, steam and cleaning. Where spraying helps durability is film consistency: an even coating at the right thickness has no thin spots to wear through early on edges and corners.

What spraying involves

Spraying is not the shortcut it looks like. Doors and drawer fronts are removed and finished as individual pieces in a professional spray booth at our shop, and everything that is not being painted has to be fully masked and protected before spraying starts. The fixed frames are then finished to match the doors. That setup is a real part of the work, and it is one reason a professional cabinet job is priced as a system — preparation, priming, spraying and curing — rather than as a quick coat of paint.

Brushing still has its place: small touch-ups, and situations where spraying is not practical. For a full kitchen refinishing, though, spraying is how you get the finish most homeowners are picturing when they decide to refinish instead of replace.

Common questions

Does spraying cost more than brushing?

Spraying involves more setup, masking and equipment, but it is part of our standard cabinet refinishing scope. Your written estimate itemizes the full scope, so you see exactly what the job includes either way.

Can I brush my cabinets myself?

You can, and many people do — just expect visible brush texture on flat doors, and know the preparation still decides whether it lasts. Degrease thoroughly, sand, and use a bonding primer before any finish coat.

What finish does MV Painting use on cabinets?

Our cabinets are cleaned, sanded, primed and fine-finish sprayed for a smooth, factory-style result, backed by a 2-year workmanship warranty.
