Cabinet Refinishing vs. Replacing: Which Is Right for Your Kitchen?
If your cabinet boxes are solid and the layout works, refinishing gives you a completely new kitchen look for a fraction of the cost of replacement — without demolition. If the layout is changing or the boxes themselves are failing, replacement is the honest answer. This page compares the two so you can decide before you spend anything.
When refinishing wins
Refinishing is the right call when the structure is good and the problem is the finish: dated colours, worn or darkened coatings, or a kitchen that simply feels tired. The doors, drawer fronts and frames are cleaned, sanded, primed and fine-finish sprayed in your new colour, while the boxes, layout and counters stay exactly where they are.
Two recent Calgary examples from our own work: in Kincora, espresso cabinets were refinished to a bright white with new crown moulding added — a full transformation with the same boxes and layout. In Maple Ridge, a worn espresso finish was restored with an exact colour match, keeping the kitchen the owners already liked and making it look new again.
When replacing makes sense
Replacement is the better answer when the cabinets themselves are the problem: water-damaged or rotting boxes, doors that are warped or broken beyond repair, or a renovation that moves walls, appliances or the island. Refinishing cannot fix a layout you do not like, and we will tell you plainly if we think your money is better spent replacing.
Cost and disruption, honestly compared
Refinishing costs a fraction of replacement because you are paying for preparation and finishing, not for new cabinetry, demolition, disposal, countertop removal and installation. It is also far less disruptive: no torn-out kitchen, no weeks of construction traffic, and your existing counters and backsplash are not disturbed. What refinishing cannot do is change the shape or size of your cabinets — the doors you have are the doors that get refinished, in the colour you choose.
Common questions
Can any cabinets be refinished?
Most cabinets with sound boxes and doors can be refinished, whether the goal is a full colour change or restoring the existing colour. The free estimate includes an assessment, and if a door or box is beyond refinishing we will show you why.
Can I change the colour completely?
Yes. A full colour change — dark wood to white is the most common — is a standard refinishing scope with full-coverage priming so the old colour does not show through.
Will the frames match the doors?
Yes. The fixed frames are cleaned, sanded, primed and finished to match the doors, so the whole kitchen reads as one factory-style finish.
