Popcorn Ceiling Removal in Calgary
Yes — MV Painting Inc. removes popcorn ceilings across Calgary and surrounding areas, and repairs them too. A full removal takes the texture off and skim coats the ceiling smooth for a modern flat finish; a repair fixes the damaged area and blends new texture into the existing one. Either way, the ceiling is primed and repainted, with repairs and painting handled in one project by one crew.
Remove it, or repair it?
MV Painting Inc. removes popcorn (stipple) ceilings completely or repairs them — and every ceiling is different, so your free estimate covers the possibilities for your specific ceiling and spells out the full process in writing before we start. For a full removal, we scrape the texture off, skim-coat the ceiling smooth, then prime and paint it. For a repair, we fix the damaged area and blend in new texture to match the existing one as closely as possible, then prime and paint. One condition comes first either way: if the ceiling has water damage, the leak causing it has to be fixed before we start — painting over an active leak only hides the stain for a while, while the damage keeps growing underneath.
How a popcorn ceiling project runs
Ceiling projects follow the process set out in our ceiling services work:
- Assessment and estimate. We inspect the ceiling, identify the texture and the cause of any damage, and provide a free written estimate.
- Protection. Floors get dropsheets, furniture is moved to the centre of the room and covered with poly, and dust is controlled throughout — ceiling work is messy by nature, and containment keeps the rest of the room clean.
- Preparation. The texture is removed, or the damaged area repaired; patches are taped and mudded in thin coats with drying time between them, then skim coated and sanded smooth.
- Priming and painting. Stain-blocking primer goes over water stains and repairs first, then two coats of ceiling paint — our standard — cut in by brush and rolled, or sprayed where the space allows.
- Inspection and cleanup. We check the finish under the room's actual lighting, handle touch-ups, and leave the space clean.
Rolled ceilings suit occupied homes, single rooms and textured ceilings. Sprayed ceilings suit empty homes and whole-house repaints — the space must be empty or fully maskable — where walls, floors, windows, fixtures and vents are fully masked and HVAC registers are covered.
Repairs and repainting, in one visit
You do not need a separate drywall contractor and painter. Our ceiling team repairs cracks, water damage and damaged texture, then primes and repaints the ceiling, so everything is finished in a single visit from one crew. Texture matching covers popcorn, knockdown and custom textures, blended into the surrounding areas.
Which repairs count as minor (included in our painting scope) and which are major (quoted separately) is confirmed in your written estimate before work begins — the breakdown is in the questions below, and our guide to drywall repairs in a painting quote explains where the line sits.
Textured ceilings in Calgary homes
Textured ceilings are common in Calgary homes — popcorn and knockdown finishes went up in thousands of houses built from the 1970s through the 2000s, so removal and texture matching are everyday work for us. Water damage from plumbing leaks or ice dams is one of the most frequent reasons ceilings need repair here. Recent examples are in our ceilings and drywall case studies.
Common questions
Do you remove popcorn ceilings in Calgary?
Can you repair part of a popcorn ceiling and match the texture?
Yes. Popcorn, knockdown and custom ceiling textures are repaired and matched across Calgary and surrounding areas, after cracks, renovations or water damage. After any ceiling drywall repair we match the existing texture and repaint, so the repair blends in with the rest of the ceiling — and repair and repainting are handled in one project, itemized in your free written estimate. You do not need a separate drywall contractor and painter.
Can I stay in my home while ceiling work is done?
In most cases, yes. We work zone by zone through your home, so the rest of the house stays livable while one area is being painted — and we try to finish bedrooms the same day, whenever the walls need no repairs, so your sleeping spaces are back in use as quickly as possible. The main exception is lacquer application, such as solvent-based lacquer work: for that, we ask that you not be in the home while it is being applied.
Are minor ceiling repairs included, or quoted separately?
Minor repairs are included in our painting scope: nail and screw holes, dents and holes up to 2 inches (50 mm), hairline cracks less than 1/16 of an inch wide, and small caulking gaps. Major repairs are quoted separately: holes larger than 2 inches, cracks wider than 1/16 of an inch or caused by structural movement, water-damaged drywall or plaster, and areas needing tape plus multiple mud coats beyond a small patch. We confirm which category your ceiling falls into in your written estimate, before work begins.
Do you offer low-odour paint options for ceilings?
Yes — MV Painting Inc. offers low-VOC and zero-VOC paint options, and every paint brand we work with offers them: Benjamin Moore Eco Spec, Sherwin-Williams Harmony, Cloverdale Horizon, Dulux Lifemaster, Behr Premium Plus and PPG Pure Performance. According to the manufacturers' technical data sheets, these paints dry to the touch in 30 minutes to 1 hour and can be recoated in 1 to 4 hours. For a child's bedroom or a sensitive person, we recommend waiting 48 hours, with the room ventilated, before sleeping in it again.
