Can You Stay Home During Interior Painting in Calgary?

In most cases, yes. MV Painting Inc. works zone by zone through your home, so the rest of the house stays livable while one area is being painted — and we try to finish bedrooms the same day, whenever the walls need no repairs, so your sleeping spaces are back in use as quickly as possible.

How zone-by-zone painting keeps the rest of your home livable

Working zone by zone means only one area of your home is an active work area at a time. We ask that you clear small items and valuables from the work areas; our crew moves the larger furniture to the centre of the room and covers everything with drop sheets and plastic for full protection, then that zone is painted and put back while the rest of the house carries on as usual.

Protection is part of the plan: switch plates and light fixtures are removed in the zone being painted, carpets are covered with a self-adhesive protective film made for carpet, and floors get protective paper and drop sheets. In bedrooms, everything is moved to the centre and covered with plastic — one reason a bedroom can be finished and handed back the same day.

Our preparation checklist covers exactly what to clear and what we protect, and our guide to how long interior painting takes shows how the zones fit into your project's schedule.

The one exception: lacquer application

The main exception is lacquer application, such as solvent-based lacquer work: for that, we ask that you not be in the house while it is being applied.

Lacquer comes up on specialty work such as cabinet and furniture finishing, where a furniture-grade lacquer finish is specified — for those projects, the application day is planned with you in advance as part of the schedule.

Low-odour paints for occupied homes

For most interior painting we use low-VOC or zero-VOC paints, chosen according to your preference and how each room is used, which keeps odour and exposure to a minimum.

Our guide to low-VOC and zero-VOC paint options lists the option from each of the six brands we work with, with drying times and our 48-hour recommendation before a child or a sensitive person sleeps in a freshly painted room.

The plan is explained before we start

Because every home and every project is different, we explain the plan at your free estimate — which zones, in what order, and what to expect each day — and there is almost always a way to adapt the schedule to your family. That is how residential painting should work: interior painters in Calgary who plan the job around your life, not the other way around. Ask the house painters in Calgary at MV Painting Inc. how a zone-by-zone plan would look for your home.

Common questions

Can we live in our home while you paint the interior?

In most cases, yes. MV Painting Inc. works zone by zone through your home, so the rest of the house stays livable while one area is being painted — and we try to finish bedrooms the same day, whenever the walls need no repairs, so your sleeping spaces are back in use as quickly as possible.

When do we have to be out of the house during painting?

The main exception is lacquer application, such as solvent-based lacquer work: for that, we ask that you not be in the house while it is being applied. Every other part of a typical interior project is planned zone by zone so your family can stay.

How quickly can we use our bedrooms again?

We try to finish bedrooms the same day, whenever the walls need no repairs, so your sleeping spaces are back in use as quickly as possible. Where walls do need repairs, drying time can extend that room's schedule — the order of zones and what to expect each day is explained at your free estimate.

Will the paint smell bother us while we stay in the home?

For most interior painting we use low-VOC or zero-VOC paints, chosen according to your preference and how each room is used, which keeps odour and exposure to a minimum.

Can the painting schedule adapt to our family's routine?

Because every home and every project is different, we explain the plan at your free estimate — which zones, in what order, and what to expect each day — and there is almost always a way to adapt the schedule to your family.
