Fence Painting in Calgary

Yes — MV Painting Inc. paints wood fences across Calgary and surrounding areas, including fence sections, posts and gates, and we stain them too. The fence is pressure washed, sanded where rough, and finished with two coats of exterior paint or stain as specified. This page explains the choice most Calgary homeowners face — paint or stain — and how a fence painting project actually runs.

Paint or stain: how Calgary homeowners choose

For a wood fence, MV Painting Inc. recommends stain if the fence has never been painted, and paint if it was painted before. Stain soaks into the wood and fades gradually as it ages, so renewing it is simple: clean the fence and apply a fresh coat. Paint lasts longer between coats and blocks UV rays more completely, but it forms a film on the surface — and when that film eventually fails, it peels, so repainting means scraping, sanding and priming first. If you want a solid colour that hides weathered or mismatched boards, a solid-colour stain gives you a paint-like opaque finish that still shows the wood's texture. And if a stained fence has gone a long time without maintenance, we recommend stepping up to a semi-solid or solid stain: the old marks and colour differences would show straight through a transparent finish, while the extra opacity evens them out so the fence looks uniform again. Whichever finish you choose, the wood has to be clean and dry — on a new pressure-treated fence we check the moisture first (below 15%) before any coating goes on, because dry wood, not the calendar, is what makes the finish last.

How a fence painting project runs

Every fence project follows the process set out in our service scopes:

  1. Cleaning and washing. Dirt and contaminants are removed and the fence sections, posts and gates are pressure washed.
  2. Sanding and preparation. Rough or peeling areas are sanded, failing coatings are removed, and adjacent landscaping and surfaces are protected before painting begins.
  3. Drying and conditioning. The wood is allowed to fully dry before coating, and is conditioned where required so a stain absorbs evenly instead of blotching.
  4. Application. Premium exterior paint or stain is applied per the manufacturer’s specifications — brush, roll or spray as appropriate, back-brushed for proper penetration. Fence sections receive two coats of exterior stain or paint as specified.
  5. Final inspection. We walk the finished fence with you to confirm even coverage and a uniform finish across every surface included in the scope.

All labour and materials are included, and every fence project is covered by our 2-year workmanship warranty.

What affects the cost

Your written estimate reflects:

  • Size of the work — the number of fence sections, posts and gates
  • Condition of the wood — weathered, rough or peeling surfaces need more washing and sanding before painting
  • Previous coatings — failing stain or paint that has to be removed or sanded back to sound wood adds preparation
  • Product selected — exterior paint, or a transparent, semi-transparent or solid-colour stain, and whether a sealer or topcoat is specified
  • What else is included — a pergola, gate, lattice or trellis finished at the same time as the fence

Every fence is different — the fastest way to know your cost is a free written estimate.

What is not included

Painting and staining restore and protect sound wood. The following are outside a fence painting scope and are quoted separately when needed: rot repair, structural repairs, board or joist replacement, wood replacement, and fence repair or replacement. Colour changes after work has begun are also excluded. If the wood has gone past what a coating can save — rot or structural damage — we will say so at the estimate stage.

Prefer the look of stain?

If showing the grain of the wood is the look you want, our deck & fence staining page covers the full staining process, the stain options and our Springbank Hill deck and fence project. Many Calgary yards end up with a mix — a stained deck and a painted fence, or the reverse — and both can be quoted in the same free written estimate. Exterior timing matters too: our guide to painting a house exterior in winter in Calgary explains the temperature windows exterior coatings need.

Common questions

Do you paint fences in Calgary?

Yes. We paint and stain wood fences across Calgary and surrounding areas, including fence sections, posts and gates. Fence sections are pressure washed, sanded where rough, and finished with two coats of exterior stain or paint as specified.

Should I paint or stain my wood fence?

What preparation is included before a fence is painted?

Decks and fences are cleaned and pressure washed, rough or peeling areas are sanded, failing coatings are removed, and adjacent landscaping and surfaces are protected. The wood is allowed to fully dry before coating, and is conditioned where required for even absorption.

My fence was stained before. Can it be painted now?

The deciding factor is the condition of the existing coating: failing stain or paint has to be removed or sanded back to sound wood before a new finish goes on. At your free estimate we assess the fence and confirm which finish it can take — and if the wood has gone past what a coating can save, we will say so at the estimate stage.

What is not included in fence painting?

Rot repair, structural repairs, board or joist replacement, and fence repair or replacement are not included in fence painting and are quoted separately when needed. Colour changes after work has begun are also excluded.
