Can You Paint a House Exterior in Winter in Calgary?

Yes — but only when the weather fully meets the paint manufacturer's specifications for the product being used. Most current exterior lines allow application down to 35 °F (about 2 °C), but Sherwin-Williams, Behr and PPG require the temperature not to drop below that minimum for 48 hours after application. MV Painting Inc. does not paint exteriors by the calendar; we paint by the forecast and by the technical data sheet of the paint on your home.

What the manufacturers themselves say

Most current exterior lines from the brands we work with — including Sherwin-Williams Duration, Emerald, Latitude and SuperPaint, Benjamin Moore Aura and Element Guard, Dulux Diamond Exterior, PPG Permanizer and Acri-Shield Max, and Behr Marquee and Ultra — allow application down to 35 °F (about 2 °C), measured on both the air and the surface. But the same data sheets add the part that matters most in Alberta: Sherwin-Williams, Behr and PPG require the temperature not to drop below that minimum for 48 hours after application, and Dulux requires it to stay in range for 24 hours with no rain or snow expected within 48 hours. Some lines are stricter still — Dulux Weatherguard sets its minimum at 4 °C, and Cloverdale's data sheets set 10 °C as the minimum in their surface-preparation instructions.

Why a single warm afternoon is not enough

That is why a single warm afternoon is not enough to paint a house exterior in Calgary: if the temperature falls below the minimum overnight while the paint is curing, the job is outside the manufacturer's specifications, no matter how mild the day felt. In practice, windows that meet the full specification — application day plus the following nights — are rare in a Calgary winter, so most exterior painting is booked in the regular season, with temperatures consistently above 10 °C.

If your project cannot wait, ask us: exterior painters in Calgary who follow the manufacturer's data sheet will check the forecast window honestly, schedule the work if a compliant window exists, and otherwise book your project for the first safe window of the season — because house painters in Calgary should never trade your 2-year workmanship warranty for a date on the calendar. Our guide to how long exterior painting takes covers the rest of the schedule.

Common questions

Do you paint exteriors in winter in Calgary?

Yes — but only when the weather fully meets the paint manufacturer's specifications for the product being used. MV Painting Inc. does not paint exteriors by the calendar; we paint by the forecast and by the technical data sheet of the paint on your home.

How cold is too cold to paint outside in Alberta?

Most current exterior lines from the brands we work with allow application down to 35 °F (about 2 °C), measured on both the air and the surface. Some lines are stricter: Dulux Weatherguard sets its minimum at 4 °C, and Cloverdale's data sheets set 10 °C as the minimum in their surface-preparation instructions.

Why does the temperature after painting matter so much?

Sherwin-Williams, Behr and PPG require the temperature not to drop below the 35 °F minimum for 48 hours after application, and Dulux requires it to stay in range for 24 hours with no rain or snow expected within 48 hours. If the temperature falls below the minimum overnight while the paint is curing, the job is outside the manufacturer's specifications.

When is the regular exterior painting season in Calgary?

Most exterior painting is booked in the regular season, with temperatures consistently above 10 °C. Windows that meet the full manufacturer specification — application day plus the following nights — are rare in a Calgary winter.

What if my exterior project cannot wait for spring?

Ask us: we check the forecast window honestly against the product's data sheet, schedule the work if a compliant window exists, and otherwise book your project for the first safe window of the season — we never trade your 2-year workmanship warranty for a date on the calendar.
