How Much Does It Cost to Paint a House in Calgary?

There is no honest flat price for painting a house, because no two houses need the same work. The price is built from the size of the home, the surfaces included, the condition of those surfaces, the preparation required, and the products you choose. That is why MV Painting provides a free, written, itemized estimate after seeing the project — so the number you approve is the number for your house, not a guess from a chart.

What actually sets the price

Size and layout. More walls, higher ceilings and more storeys mean more surface, more ladder and scaffold work, and more time. A bungalow and a two-storey with a vaulted entry are different jobs even at the same square footage.

Which surfaces are included. Walls only is one scope. Adding ceilings, trim, baseboards, crown moulding, doors and window frames adds detailed work on every one of those surfaces.

Condition and preparation. Prep decides how long the finish lasts, and it is priced honestly in the estimate. Minor repairs are included in our standard scope: nail and screw holes, dents and holes up to 2 inches, hairline cracks under 1/16 inch, and small caulking gaps. Major repairs are quoted separately: larger holes, wide or structural cracks, water-damaged drywall, and areas needing tape and multiple mud coats.

Colour change and coats. Our standard is two coats. A dramatic change — dark colours to white, for example — can need a third coat for full coverage, and that is quoted separately rather than buried in the price.

Products. We work with Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams, Cloverdale, Dulux, Behr and PPG. The brand and product line you choose affects material cost, and we explain the differences during the estimate so the choice is yours.

Access. Tall stairwells, high exterior walls and tight sites need the right equipment and setup time, and the estimate reflects that.

Interior vs. exterior cost drivers

Interior pricing turns on surface count and condition: rooms, ceilings, trim packages, and how much repair the walls need. Exterior pricing turns on exposure and access: siding, stucco or brick condition, failing or peeling coatings that must come off, the height of the walls, and coatings built for Alberta weather — such as premium elastomeric coatings on stucco. In both cases, the biggest surprise in a cheap quote is usually the prep that was left out.

Why we do not publish price ranges

Ranges copied from other websites mix scopes, cities and prep levels, and they cannot see your walls. A range that assumes no repairs and one coat tells you nothing about your project. Instead, every MV Painting estimate is written and itemized line by line — each area, surface and product is listed — so you can compare our quote against any other on scope, not just on the total. A 30% deposit secures your booking date once you approve the proposal.

Common questions

Is the estimate really free?

Yes. Estimates are free, done after assessing the project, and provided in writing with an itemized breakdown. There is no obligation to proceed.

What is included in the price?

Labour and materials as itemized in the proposal, standard preparation including minor repairs, and two coats of finish. Major repairs and a third coat, when a colour change needs one, are quoted separately and approved by you before any work is done.

Why do quotes from different painters vary so much?

Usually because the scopes differ: prep included or skipped, one coat or two, product quality, and whether trim, ceilings and doors are in or out. Compare the line items, not just the totals.
