Trim, Baseboard and Door Painting in Calgary

Yes — MV Painting Inc. paints baseboards, trim, doors, window frames and crown moulding across Calgary and surrounding areas, as a standalone project or as part of a full interior repaint. Trim is filled, sanded, caulked and primed where needed, then finished with two coats — and because trim has to dry before the walls can be painted, all of the trim in a 1,000 sq ft home takes about one full day on its own.

What trim painting includes

Trim is the woodwork that frames every room, and it takes the most daily wear — vacuum bumps on baseboards, hands on door frames, sun on window sills. Our trim painting covers:

Baseboards. Baseboard painting across Calgary and surrounding areas, with careful caulking and prep for crisp, clean lines where baseboard meets wall and floor.

Doors and casings. Interior doors sprayed to a smooth, factory-style finish across Calgary and surrounding areas, hardware protected and edges done properly.

Window frames. Wood, metal and vinyl window frames refinished across Calgary and surrounding areas, protecting them from Alberta weather and years of wear.

Crown moulding. Crown moulding painted with precision across Calgary and surrounding areas, restoring detail work that a rushed job usually blurs over.

Exterior trim and fascia. Outside the home, trim, fascia, windows and doors are painted as part of our exterior painting work — see our Signal Hill exterior trim repaint for a recent example.

The trim painting process

Trim shows every shortcut, so it follows the same process as our interior painting work:

  1. Protection first. Floors, furniture, fixtures and adjacent surfaces are covered with professional masking materials. Switch plates and outlet covers are removed where applicable.
  2. Surface preparation. Nail holes, pinholes, dents and minor imperfections are filled; visible cracks and gaps are caulked. Repaired areas are sanded smooth and spot-primed so the finish coats adhere evenly.
  3. Two finish coats. Trim receives two coats of premium paint. Doors and detailed woodwork are fine-finish sprayed where the space allows — spraying is how you get a smooth finish with no brush marks — and where spraying is impractical, we switch to brush and roller and tell you so.
  4. Inspection and cleanup. We walk the finished work with you, remove all masking materials, and leave a clean work area.

Trim, doors and ceilings follow the same discipline: proper prep, the right product for the surface, and a final inspection before we call it done. Our spray painting page explains when spraying is the right call — and when it is not.

How long does trim painting take?

All of the trim takes 1 day, because it has to dry and the walls cannot be painted at the same time. That is why trim is scheduled as its own stage: in a full interior repaint of a 1,000 sq ft home — walls, ceilings and trim together — the complete job typically takes 2 to 3 days, depending on how many coats are applied. The same applies outside, where all of the exterior trim takes about 1 day as well.

Our guide to how long it takes to paint a house in Calgary lays out the full interior and exterior timelines by home size, and your schedule is confirmed in your free written estimate before work starts.

Small repairs and caulking are part of the prep

Minor repairs are included in our preparation: nail and screw holes, dents and holes up to 2 inches (50 mm), hairline cracks less than 1/16 of an inch wide, and small caulking gaps. That covers the everyday damage trim collects — the gaps that open along baseboards and casings, and the dents doors pick up over the years.

Major repairs — holes larger than 2 inches, cracks caused by structural movement, water-damaged material — are quoted separately and itemized in your written estimate; “major” never means we refuse the work. Our page on drywall repairs in a painting quote explains exactly where the line sits.

Common questions

Can I have just the trim, baseboards and doors painted, without repainting the walls?

Yes. You can have us paint the whole room or just selected elements — trim, baseboards, doors and window frames — and everything is itemized in your free written estimate, so you approve exactly the pieces you want done.

How long does it take to paint all the trim in a house?

All of the trim in a 1,000 sq ft home takes about 1 day, because the trim has to dry and the walls cannot be painted at the same time. If there is more than one colour and those colours meet each other, they should ideally be painted on 2 different days.

Are interior doors sprayed or painted by hand?

Interior doors are sprayed to a smooth, factory-style finish, with hardware protected and edges done properly, and door spray work includes removal and reinstallation of the doors and hardware. Fine-finish spraying suits doors, trim and millwork — and where site conditions make spraying impractical, we will tell you so and switch to brush and roller.

Is caulking included with trim painting?

Yes. Visible cracks and gaps are caulked during preparation, and small caulking gaps are among the minor repairs included with our painting preparation: nail and screw holes, dents and holes up to 2 inches (50 mm), and hairline cracks less than 1/16 of an inch wide. Larger damage is quoted separately and itemized in your written estimate.

How many coats do trim and doors receive?

Two coats are our standard for interior walls, ceilings and trim — proper prep plus two full coats for even colour and a durable finish. Sprayed work follows the same standard: a two-coat spray application, with drying time between coats.

What sheen do we recommend for trim and doors?

For trim, baseboards and doors, MV Painting Inc. recommends matching the trim sheen to the sheen of your walls: satin when the walls are flat, and semi-gloss when the walls are eggshell — satin also works with eggshell walls, because the difference in shine between the two is small. Doors, trim and frames are all painted in the same sheen, so your millwork has one consistent, polished finish. Before we start, we show you the sheen options in person so you can compare the actual shine and choose with confidence — the final decision is always yours.
